For this series I ask a subject to select their favourite novel. I then create a mise-en-scene evoking the atmosphere of their chosen book and take their portrait. By acting out a role they have chosen themselves, for themselves, I attempt to reveal another layer of my subjects’ identity, both in terms of how the viewer perceives them and how they wish to be perceived by the viewer. Inspired by the old masters in painting, I use the descriptive quality of a large-format camera and the richness of colour film to allow for the interplay between different perceptions of reality and fiction and more importantly, I use the narrative strategy of literature in order to create an original portrait.
