TextArt in Progress is inspired by art schools across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The series, which started in 2009, consists of images of studios where the students work. Shot with a large format camera and printed analogically, the images are intentionally detailed, frontal and neutral. “I have a certain way of confronting myself with reality,” Hamill explains, “and that is conveyed by frontal images, and by a cold aesthetic that offers the spectator the possibility of visually navigating a space that is simultaneously contemplative and dynamic”. 

Despite their absence, the students remain present through the spaces they have occupied, the objects they have engaged with, and the work they are in the process of making. The spaces exude a palpable sense of collective energy. The objects that are scattered throughout the studios often belong to the Western canon of history of art and constitute a web of cross-references, which acts as a unifying device throughout the series. The studios, ranging from Saigon to Saint Petersburg and Bombay to New Haven, condense the presence of students, the passage of time, and the production of art, creating an intensely stratified space.

TextFor this series I ask a subject to select their favourite novel. I then create a mise-en-scene evoking the atmosphere of their chosen book and take their portrait. By acting out a role they have chosen themselves, for themselves, I attempt to reveal another layer of my subjects’ identity, both in terms of how the viewer perceives them and how they wish to be perceived by the viewer. Inspired by the old masters in painting, I use the descriptive quality of a large-format camera and the richness of colour film to allow for the interplay between different perceptions of reality and fiction and more importantly, I use the narrative strategy of literature in order to create an original portrait.

TextCommissioned by the Centre Hospitalier de Rouffach, a psychiatric hospital in Alsace, France, Rouffach is an investigation of the experience of the encounter with another human being mediated through the camera. Seven patients were asked what their worst and happiest moments were. Each patient was filmed frontally in a studio responding to these two questions and was also filmed in a different location geographically linked to the hospital The figure is always walking away from the viewer, repeatedly criss-crossing the frame. These images of each person talking, listening, and walking through space, are juxtaposed in a triple-channel projection.
